Rape Charges Against Duke Lacrosse Players Dropped

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper announced today that all criminal charges made against several Duke lacrosse players have been dropped.  In the stunning announcement, Cooper was very critical of Durham County District Mike Nifong’s handling of the case.  Read the details of the announcement by clicking here.

Cooper also stated that not only was there insufficient evidence against the Duke players, but that these men were “innocent.”  It is clear that Cooper believes that the prosecution of the Duke lacrosse players was unwarranted, to say the least.

Now that these young men have been declared innocent by Cooper, there is a significant question as to whether they have viable claims against Nifong and Durham County for malicious prosecution.  Considering the damning statements made by Cooper against Nifong, a civil suit filed by the men against Nifong and the county seems more likely than not.

  1. Roger says:

Nifong has really given criminal prosecutors a black eye, as far as public perception is concerned. Nothing short of his permanent disbarment will be acceptable.

Now we’ll see if the accuser, Crystal Gail Magnum (that can’t be her real name!), will face any criminal charges.
